There are a number of software applications that are familiar to any particle physicist. Most are actively maintained and have a long history of development. Most are available on the web free of charge. A selection are listed below:
GEANT4 is a package for simulating the passage of particles through matter, that is widely used in areas such as particle physics, nuclear physics, accelerator science, medical physics and space science.
ROOT is a package that provides a large number of tools to organise, analyse and visualise datasets. This package is extensively used by the HEP community. The Sydney group maintains a page with a number of examples and tips.
